Our Magnetic Separators Protect Plastics Processes from Contamination

Protecting Plastics Process Equipment and Product Purity

Our Magnetic Separators and Metal Detectors protect expensive process machinery from metal contamination, thereby reducing breakdowns and increasing productivity. They are used in either recycled or virgin plastics processes to protect moulding tools, grinders, extruders, nozzles, mixers and rollers from potentially damaging objects such as nails, screws, or metal closures. Metal Separation and Detection systems are a key component in ensuring the quality of finished product which is at risk of being impregnated by ferrous contamination.

A range of plastic materials

Typical Magnetic Separator or Metal Detector Applications

Our magnetic separators and metal detectors can be installed anywhere, typically in granulate production, material stock silos, grinding, general gravity or pneumatic fed lines including:

  • Free-fall pre-silo, in-feed to silo or Octabin
  • Post-silo feed to extruder or moulder hopper feeds
  • Vertical or inclined gravity feed chutes
  • Quality control sampling points
  • Bagging or bin fill stations
  • Free-fall chutes pre-extruder
  • Pre and post pellet presses
  • Pre-silo, pneumatic pipeline raw material feed
  • Conveyor in-feed to cutting mills or shredders
  • Standing or slow moving columns on material feeders

Magnetic separators and metal detectors for the virgin and recycled plastic industries

We offer a wide range of plastic and recycling magnetic separation systems that can be placed at different points along the processing line to ensure metal contamination does not impact the quality of the product.

Magnetic separators include:

Primary units (used at the beginning of a process for the removal ‘tramp’ metals):

  • Magnetic Drum Metal Separator – The high-intensity drum magnetic separator is ideal for the continuous removal of tramp ferrous contamination from any dry bulk material and is regularly installed in the most arduous of environments.
  • Housed Separating Drum  – Continuously removes tramp ferrous contamination from any dry bulk material. Ideal for end-of-line conveyor discharge or vibratory feeders.
  • Deep Field Magnetic Plate Separator – These large permanent magnet packs attract tramp metal contamination and are ideal for use on flat bed or troughed conveyors.
  • Magnetic Overband Separator – Permanent overband magnets with automatic cleaning, can be placed cross belt or parallel above flat or trough type conveyors to remove tramp metal contamination.
  • Magnetic Head Roller Separator – Are installed at the discharge end of flat or troughed belt conveyors and are designed to remove tramp iron that cannot be removed by either a plate or overband magnet because of the conveyed product depth.

Secondary units (used to take smaller metal impurities out of the material):

  • Magnetic Separation Grids / Grates – Can be used on most gravity/free fall lines, providing simple, cost-effective protection against ferrous contamination.
  • Housed Easy Clean Grid Magnetic Separator – These units can be installed throughout a processing facility to ensure contamination is removed at the source of generation. All dry powders and granular type materials can be processed through the unit.
  • Pneumag – is designed to be installed in vacuum and pressure conveying pipes (lean/dilute phase), these units are designed specifically for pipelines conveying fine powder material, a typical installation would see Pneumags installed on entry to a silo (tanker discharging) and then inside the factory where the material is being transferred to the point of use. Higher pressure versions are also available for medium phase application at 2-3 barg pressure.
  • Auto-Shuttle Magnetic Separator – This magnetic separator can carry out a full clean without the need to stop the process.
  • Rota-Grid – Our high intensity magnetic Rota-Grid separator has been designed specifically to process difficult products that are prone to bridging and/or caking. The unit contains a centrally mounted magnetic ‘rota’ assembly: numerous ‘easy clean’ magnetic rods are arranged in a ‘wheel’ around and parallel to the axis of rotation. The number of rods used depends on the inlet and outlet size.

Metal detector systems include:

  • PROTECTOR – Installed on the throat of the plastic injection moulding machine as the last line of defence for metal impurities entering the machine and finished product
  • RAPID VARIO – Ideal for use in the plastics industry, it detects and separates all magnetic and non-magnetic metal contaminants, even if enclosed in the product.
  • GF Metal Detector – Suitable for use in vacuum and pressure pipelines where small metal particles in the plastic melting process often result in costly breakdowns of injection moulders, extruders, and blow moulders.
